What is cyber security?
Cyber security means protecting your devices and the websites or apps you use. It helps keep personal information safe and stops offenders from getting into someone’s accounts or stealing data. It helps protect your family from scams, hacking, and other online threats.
What are the potential risks?
Without good cyber security, your child could face risks like:
- Scam emails or direct messages: Fake messages that try to trick them into sharing personal details.
- Hacking: Someone breaking into their accounts and stealing personal information.
- Weak passwords: Easy to guess passwords make it easier for offenders to get in.
- Outdated software: Old apps or systems may have security gaps that are easier for offenders to exploit.
How to help your child stay better protected from cyber crime
1. Use a separate and strong email password
Make sure your child’s email password is different from their other accounts. If someone gets into their email, they could reset all their other passwords.
Help them to think about what makes a strong password for example using three random words that are easy to remember but hard to guess. Add numbers and symbols to make it even stronger.
2. Consider turning on two-factor authentication (2FA)
2FA adds an extra layer of protection. After entering a password, your child will get a code by text or app to confirm it’s really them.
3. Keep devices updated
Make sure your child’s apps and devices have the latest updates. Updates fix problems and help keep hackers out.
