A guide for parents and carers: Talking to your child about online sexual harassment

What is it?

In spring 2021, the Children’s Commissioner for England undertook the largest ever survey of children and young people, ‘The Big Ask’, to understand more about their lives. They found that children, especially girls, who talked about their experiences of sexualised bullying and child on child abuse were calling firmly for more support. Most want that support to come from their parents or carers.

This guidance for parents and carers is based on the voices of children and young people giving tips to adults on how to tackle subjects including:

  • online pornography
  • sharing nude images
  • sexualised bullying
  • editing photos and body image
  • peer pressure

It gives advice on how to make conversations easier, what each issue is and how it can affect children and young people.

The guide also details what to do if something goes wrong and links to further resource and information.

Where to find it?

The guide for parents and summary poster are available to download from the Children’s Commissioner for England’s website.
