Towards a theoretical framework for understanding the development of media-related needs

Many young people and adults alike enjoy using technology and media. The question of why people choose and prefer particular media activities has led researchers to question what ‘needs’ are being fulfilled when young people use media.

Dr Adam Galpin of University of Salford has developed a framework that combines more general theories of basic human needs with theories relating to the needs that media specifically fulfils. Dr Galpin has developed a framework that helps us to better understand young people’s media-related needs; how these are expressed through development and how they can be applied to young people's use of social media.

Media-related needs include:

  • Competence
  • Autonomy
  • Relatedness
  • Hedonic needs
