How safe are our children? 2019

What is it?

A collection of statistics on online child abuse compiled by the NSPCC.

Previously, the NSPCC How safe are our children? series has looked at child abuse more broadly. However, from 2019 onwards, the Office for National Statistics will publish a compendium of child abuse data sources in England and Wales. Therefore this year, the NSPCC has refocused its report to look at online child abuse only.

Data sources include:

  • Crime statistics on online sexual offences and child sexual abuse images
  • Survey responses to questions on online sexual abuse and inappropriate content
  • Internet Watch Foundation and industry reports

In the report, the NSPCC also makes a series of recommendations for the responsibilities of a new statutory regulator of industry.

A statutory regulator was proposed in the government’s Online Harms white paper earlier this year.
