MURDER GAMES

Murder Games

The BBC have produced a 'docudrama' about the murder of 14 year old Breck Bednar after he was groomed online.

The programme ‘Murder Games’ sees Breck's family and friends recount how Breck was manipulated and isolated by Lewis Daynes, then aged 18, over the course of nine months. Breck was ultimately persuaded to meet Daynes in person at his Essex flat and was killed.

The films explore the ways in which young people can be groomed on gaming platforms highlighting tactics such as flattery, false promises and manipulation. The videos feature the perspectives of Breck's mother and siblings as they adjust to their tragic loss.

Breck's friends also feature in the films and explain some of the warning signs of grooming through gaming. They offer advice and insights to help other young people when gaming online.

The BBC have produced resources for teachers and students to help develop and structure lessons and outline key learning objectives from the films and accompanying discussions. These resources include:

  • Background notes on Breck's case and news coverage for teachers and students
  • Spotting the signs of grooming for teachers
  • Spotting the signs of grroming for students
  • Activities and questions to consider

The BBC suggests that the videos are aimed at children who are 11 years and older. Suitability will depend on the setting and individual needs of each child.
