Trends in online child sexual exploitation: Examining the distribution of captures of live-streamed child sexual abuse

A new research report by the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) has highlighted statistics on children being groomed, coerced and blackmailed into live-streaming their own sexual abuse over webcams, tablets and mobile phones. The report reveals that 98% of images found were of children aged 13 and under, 28% were aged 10 or under.

IMPACT OF ONLINE AND OFFLINE CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE

Impact of online and offline child sexual abuse

This research is intended to understand more about the impact of child sexual abuse to inform the appropriate support to children. The research team carried out interviews and questionnaires with a group of young people aged 15-19, who were recruited through the NSPCC, Childline and CEOP. The research focused on technology assisted child sexual abuse in particular, but sexual abuse often involves both offline and online contexts and environments.

SOCIAL MEDIA AND YOUNG PEOPLE

Young girls, social media use and the issues and concerns these girls have about their on-line lives

This research conducted by Georgina Newton outlines key findings about 11 and 12-year old girls, their engagement with social media and some of the key concerns or challenges social media presents young people. This data has developed from a larger PhD research topic exploring young girls and media socialisation. The data was gathered through focus groups and one-to-one interviews during 2015 and 2016, in two schools in the Midlands area of the UK.
